Background: First established in late 70’s, CanGEA is one of Canada’s oldest clean energy industry groups.  Founded by well-known geological experts, such as Dr. Jack Souther, the early explorers of Canada’s geothermal potential have recently seen their organization brought into new prominence.

There are several classes of geothermal energy, and CanGEA is focused on developing deep-heat geothermal, which raises heat from the Earth’s crust and turns water into steam.  The steam then powers turbines, generating electricity.  Natural formations such as hot springs, volcanoes, and other thermal phenomena are evidence that one of our planet’s best sources of energy is the planet itself.  The best geothermal resources exist in areas of seismic activity, where fault lines bring heat sources, such as magma, close to the surface.

BC has significant potential, and the University of BC estimates a resource field of between four and six thousand megawatts exists here.  Click here for a list of other geothermal-related project in Canada.  Currently there are no major geothermal projects in Canada, and only one province, BC, has a geothermal energy policy.  This is beginning to change as CanGEA builds new relationships with different levels of government, and Natural Resources Canada.  CanGEA is also working to educate Canadians about geothermal energy’s incredible potential as a clean power source.
