“Cleantech is the new gold rush for business,” says John Goetz, a Calgary lawyer who leads the climate-change and emissions-trading group at Fraser Milner Casgrain. And law firms are providing companies with the legal picks and shovels to help them mine the gold.
“The opportunities for lawyers are fairly broad.”
The fast-growing cleantech industry-- also known as greentech—is an impressive sponge for legal services. It comprises upstart knowledge-based businesses, which are creating technologies and services that improve corporate performance and productivity, while reducing energy costs and negative environmental impacts.
Within this group are companies and ventures focused on renewable energy derived from such sources as biofuels and fuel cells as well as geothermal, wind, solar and wave sources. Also included are companies selling electrical grid modernization and carbon-management products and services.
