NEW Program! Wind Turbine Technician
NEW Program! Geothermal Engineering Technician
St Lawrence College is home to Canada’s ground-breaking diploma level program in renewable energy technology. The first courses ran in 2005, and graduates from the 2 year technologist program are now entering the clean energy industries.
The course material involves energy auditing and modeling of conventional heating and lighting systems, leading to energy efficiency improvements for residential and commercial buildings. Students are also trained in sizing, specification and implementation of solar photovoltaic, solar thermal and other sustainable energy systems.
The country’s first ‘Energy House’ training facility was opened in the fall of 2005. This off-grid training facility offers, to students, a comprehensive selection of renewable energy equipment for hands-on training in; solar thermal and photovoltaic, ground source heat pump, small wind, solar air heating, and other sustainable energy technologies.
It also plays an educational role in the wider community through a non-profit Kingston organization called SWITCH.
The Wind Turbine Technician program will provide students with a sound knowledge of the electrical and mechanical field as they relate to wind turbines. You will also learn about fiberglass blade repairs, electronics, instrumentation, and computer applications as they relate to wind turbines. You will receive complete safety training for working at heights and in confined spaces. In order to complete this program, you must have no fear of heights and you must be physically fit.
The Wind Power Industry is one of the fastest growing industries in Canada, and Internationally. The demand for trained and certified Wind Turbine Technicians is also growing rapidly.
As a Wind Turbine Technician you will be at the forefront of a new and growing industry. You will be working with modern technology in a demanding environment. It will be your responsibility to install and carry out scheduled preventative maintenance on large size wind turbines as a member of a maintenance team. This will include performing inspections, taking measurements and providing documentation. You will be called upon to diagnose and repair any fault and as such contribute to the on-going safe operation of the Wind Turbine.
As part of our program, we will provide our students the opportunity to be certified by BZEE, the German wind industry training institute. This internationally recognized certification will ensure wide access to wind turbine technician jobs. We will also be working toward inclusion of training for working on off-shore wind turbines. We will have a classroom on-site at the nearby Wolfe Island Wind farm, one of the largest wind farms in Ontario. - View all listings in this section »
